James was born at Norfolk, Nebraska, on 5 February 1859.¹ He was the son of James Guthery Iler and Sarah Foster. He married Mary May Othille Herbst in 1890.² James died on 4 July 1933 at Douglas County, Oregon, at age 74.³ He was buried after 4 July 1933 at Rondeau Cemetery, Tiller, Douglas, Oregon.
