

Austin was born at
Somerhill Township, Cambria County, PA, on 14 February 1841. He was the son of
Abraham Crum and
Mandilla Amanda Eamigh. Austin (Oston) T. Crum began military service in April 1861. He married
Sarah Weaver, daughter of
Jacob Weaver and
Elizabeth Reinhart, on 18 August 1864.
1 Austin (Oston) T. Crum ended military service on 15 July 1865; Austin was 21 when he was enrolled as a Private in April 1861. He was struck by a piece of shell and was confined to a hospital in Richmond, VA. He was also treated for Typhoid fever. In 1864 he was honorably discharged to re-enlist as a veteran and was given the usual 30-day furlough. He fought in the battles of Gettysburg and Petersburg and was honorably discharged in July 1865.

Enlisted as a Private on 27 January 1862, Enlisted in Company I, 54th Infantry Regiment Pennsylvania on 27 January 1862. Mustered out Company I, 54th Infantry Regiment Pennsylvania on 15 July 1865 in Harrisburg, PA.

Photo of headstone is hard to read. Transcription says he died 7 April 1896 (35 years, 1 month, 22 days) which would place his birth in 1861, not 1841. However, upon close examination of the headstone, his age could be interpreted as 55 years, not 35). He was buried after 7 April 1896 at
